Marcia Hewitt Johnson is an artist whose work is included in corporate and private collections. A common theme in her artworks is comparing culture to describe the world. She has exhibited in juried shows, galleries, and museums.
For 25 years Marcia’s art career was devoted to creating artquilts for the wall using fiber and color to describe the places she traveled. Color is the emphasis in her fiber pieces which are hand dyed fabric in graduated palettes to create a dramatic contemporary statement. The resulting color shifts are more representative of painting techniques than traditional work in fiber. In choosing a color palette and creating it herself, she is able to assemble an atmosphere or feeling about a specific place.
Pivotal to all of Marcia’s works are her inspirational travel photographs and books published as the Traveler Collection, and can be viewed at www.blurb.com. It has been her interest to portray, through the use of photos and color, an impression of the cultures that she has researched, observed, and photographed. Using photos from travel adventures, she assembled photo collages or “photoquilts”. Her photoquilts have been acclaimed as an unique approach to designing artworks.
“I am fueled by finding similarities between cultures, and from that discovery, creating artwork that builds new connections, communications and creativities.” mhj
Book making is the final process in all of Marcia’s art projects. She has enabled herself to tell her travel stories due to her devotion to writing a daily travel journal.
